Living in Durham

An introduction to Durham's neighborhoods, downtown and commute options for people relocating to the Triangle.

Durham is the Triangle's most varied city: historic neighborhoods, a busy downtown, newer suburbs and rural edges.

Areas to know

  • Downtown and Trinity Park have older homes, condos and restaurants within walking distance.
  • Hope Valley and Forest Hills offer mature trees and mid-century and older homes.
  • South Durham, near I-40 and Southpoint, is convenient to RTP and Chapel Hill.
  • North Durham has more land and lower price points in many areas.

Getting around

Durham is about 20 to 30 minutes from Chapel Hill and closer to RTP. GoDurham runs the city bus system.

Things to check

Durham County and the City of Durham have separate tax rates. Use the county's GIS tools to confirm which apply.
